You just got laid-off. Your girlfriend dumped you. You are getting a divorce. Your child has a life-threatening disease. You best friend betrayed you. Your co-workers are gossiping about you. You are broke. You can’t get a boyfriend. All your friends husbands and kids, and you are still single. You are at a dead-end job. You failed a course. You are sick. You have no idea what is the purpose of your life. You have no real friends. Your girlfriend cheated on you. You got rejected by a date. You are ignored and overlooked. Life is full of setbacks and heartache. Life has it’s ups and downs and when we are down, we all feel sad or discouraged from time to time.

Some people turn to medication to alleviate depressions. Medications such as, Paxil, Xanax, or Zoloft are used for the treatment of depression and helps to elevate mood. How these medications work is that they increase the amount of a neurotransmitter, called serotonin, that is available in certain parts of the brain. Although you may start feeling better within a few weeks of treatment, but there is a price to pay for that temporary relief. Common side effect include weight gain and erectile dysfunction, which ends up causing more depression over time.

Surprisingly, to counter this, a Canadian study shows that the impotence drug Viagra also improves symptoms of minor depression in men taking it for both conditions.

Dr. Sidney Kennedy, psychiatrist-in-chief at the University Health Network in Toronto, says many men with erection problems have symptoms of depression and decreased quality of life, but most studies evaluating the impact of impotence treatment on depression have only looked at men with major depression.

In contrast, Kennedy and his team studied 184 men who had had erection problems for about four years and also met the criteria for minor, but not major, depression.

The researchers randomly assigned the men to undergo six weeks of treatment with Viagra (also known as sildenafil) or inactive placebo pills.

By six weeks, the 98 men who received Viagra had a 47 per cent reduction in their depression scores, indicating a change from mild to minimal depression. In comparison, men taking placebos had only a 26 per cent decrease in their scores, which remained in the range of mild depression.

As expected, Viagra significantly improved the men’s sexual function. By six weeks, the proportion of successful intercourse attempts was 77 per cent for the sildenafil group versus 40 per cent for placebo, and 63 per cent of patients on sildenafil had no erection problems, compared with 53 per cent for placebo.

Quality of life was also significantly improved in men receiving Viagra.

NO VIAGRA? NO VORRY.

Perhaps, you don’t have clinical depression, but sometimes when it comes to your spiritual life or your soul, you just can’t seem to “get it up”. You’ve tried everything, but the conditions around you just get you down. Life has got you discourage and life’s conditions has you feeling like you are spiriling out of control. You don’t have access to Viagra…now what? I have a possible solution…I would like to call it, “Viagra for your soul.

There is a way out and you are not alone. David was there right along with you.

David, pre-king stage, he was at a point in time when he felt so discourage and so defeated that he was about to give up. But he didn’t give up and neither should you, because when you feel that way, that is when Victory is imminent, if you just keep on, keeping on. I’ll share with you the story and please read it carefully. I pray it’ll lift your spirits.

DAVID AT ZIKLAG

Here is David’s situation, can you relate to it?

The snapshot were are about to see is that of David at Ziklag. Here he is experiencing unbearable pain, unspeakable grief and overflowing sorrow is captured in a wrenching phrase. David’s fortunes were at their lowest ebb. To understand his position we must go a little farther back in his history. David did not need to be in Ziklag. The path to Ziklag started from a lack of trust. Worn out by the persecution of Saul, he left the country where he was so ill at ease, and he went away into the land of the Philistines, expecting there to escape from further turmoil, but instead encountered trials of a worse kind.

David’s Ziklag experience contains a lesson that spans time and space, for out of the ashes of Ziklag’s sorrow and despair rises the smoke of a lesson that speaks in a language so basic we all can understand. Ziklag in many ways is representative of life and thus conveys a message that speaks to us all. There are times when life caves in and the bottom falls out.

“And they wept until they had no more power to weep.” A time that may be announced by a text, a late night call, a physician’s conference, a test result, a circumstance where we wrestle with the brute facts of suffering and death. Where discouraged, disheartened, despondent, we struggle under the burden of private pain or unexpected affliction that literally turns our lives upside down.

That painful reality is decidedly disconcerting to many Christians, especially to the followers of the wealth and happiness doctrine, the comforting view that the Christian life means being protected from all adversity, forgetting that in John 16:33 Jesus promises, “in the world you will have trouble.” The fact is the Christian life does not insulate against a Ziklag reality. Piety is no guarantee of preferential treatment or easy passage, whether it’s at Jerusalem, Samaria, Ziklag, Vancouver, Surrey or Richmond. The reality is the experience of pillows wet with tears, sleepless nights, difficult days. Times when life caves in and the bottom falls out.

As the scripture records, “David was greatly distressed.” His city was burnt, his wives were gone, the sons and daughters of his comrades were all captive, and Ziklag, where they had made a home, smoked before them in blackened ruins. The people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters. Could it get any worse?

Yes. David’s men of war, wounded in heart, mutinied against their leader, and were ready to stone him.

He turned to the relationship he had always relied on. He found strength in the Lord his God.

And this emphasizes David’s intimate relationship with the one who from the beginning had always been with him. The strength he needed then, only God could provide. The secret of strength when the world is crumbling about us is in calling on God.

While the path to Ziklag started with a lack of trust in God, the path out of the Ziklag experience started with a renewed trust in God. The God who, in spite of David’s feeble faith and trembling trust, responded to David’s cry and his need. That loving God will respond to your cry and your need. For a sobering truth is, right now you may be at the Ziklag of your life. You may not need to imagine the worst thing that may happen—it’s happening now. Others may not be aware but you feel ankle deep in ashes. The path to your Ziklag might be different but the ashes swirl about your feet.

Here is what we can learn from David…Some tips for when the bottom falls out:

1. ENCOURAGE YOURSELF

David, “encouraged himself in the Lord,” the Lord his God, the Lord who didn’t forsake him to the lion, or to the bear, nor to the giant. He reviewed his past eventful life and his soul was refreshed, realizing that yes, there are times when life caves in and the bottom falls out, there is no time when God is not sufficient to provide all you need.

David encouraged himself! Have you ever had to encourage to himself when no one was around? When your friends are too busy? When the pastor is unavailable? David encouraged himself and you to as well!

HOW?

a.) Read the Bible

Truth can make you stand when you can’t stand.

b.) Read Some Quotes From The Greats

When I’m feeling down I like to read some quotes from some of the most successful people of all time. This is a great reminder that EVERYONE must face setbacks. In fact, it is a pre-requisite for success. There is no record of anybody accomplishing anything without MANY setbacks and failures along the way.

Setbacks let you know that you’re making progress.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Success is the ability to move from one failure to the next with enthusiasm.
- Winston Churchhill

Most people give up just when they’re about to achieve success. They quit on the one yard line. They give up at the last minute of the game, one foot from a winning touchdown.
- Ross Perot

Every single peak performing human being, every single high achieving man or woman, has been a person who has thrown off the natural tendency to play it safe and stay within the comfort zone, and has continually tried to exceed their previous levels of accomplishment, has continually moved forward into the risk zone, to try something more and bigger and better and more important. Every single accomplishment in the history of man, has come from men and women who have had the courage to take the risks, to step out even though they had no guarantee or assurance of success…

In studying the lives and stories of the most outstanding men and women of all of history, we find that every single one of them has been a great failure. People do not understand the importance of failure in achievement. The fact is that it is impossible to succeed without failing, that failure is an indispensable prerequisite for success, and that all great success is proceeded by great failure. Every single person who has tried to accomplish something outside the ordinary has suffered setback and obstacle and defeat and adversity and disappointment and heartache over and over again as they have moved toward their goal. There is no record of anybody ever having achieved any kind of success without having failed over and over again. The only difference is that the winners continually pick themselves up and carry on knowing that ultimate success is inevitable as long as they keep on going on.
- Brian Tracy

2. GET OFF YOUR ASHES, but HOLD ON!

HOW?

When I am down and feeling blue, the only way to get off your ashes, is to literally get of my a$$ and hit the gym. Exercise does amazing thing to boost our mood. Check it out:

Improved self-esteem is a key psychological benefit of regular physical activity. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception ofpain.

Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. For example, the feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as “euphoric.” That feeling, known as a “runner’s high,” can be accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life.

Endorphins act as analgesics, which means they diminish the perception of pain. They also act as sedatives. They are manufactured in your brain, spinal cord, and many other parts of your body and are released in response to brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. The neuron receptors endorphins bind to are the same ones that bind some pain medicines. However, unlike with morphine, the activation of these receptors by the body’s endorphins does not lead to addiction or dependence.

Regular exercise has been proven to help:

Reduce stress

Ward off anxiety and feelings of depression

Boost self-esteem

Improve sleep

Exercise also has these added health benefits:

It strengthens your heart.

It increases energy levels.

It lowers blood pressure.

It improves muscle tone and strength.

It strengthens and builds bones.

It helps reduce body fat.

It makes you look fit and healthy.

3. KNOW WHEN YOU FEEL SIFTED, YOU ARE GETTING SHIFTED!

When you are sifted, it might be painful, but you are getting refined! It’s a good thing. Don’t be quick to get out of the sifting because after you will be shifted!

Something is about to happen in your life, you got to believe it and you got to have hope. If you have been through battle after battle…something is about to happen. Let hope arise! When you are going through ziklag….been through hell…God is going to do something. JUST BELIEVE! GOD IS GOOD! LET HOPE ARISE! GET UP! GET UP! YOU CAN CAN DO IT! GOD CAN DO IT! What is GOD going to do? Check my blog tomorrow for PART II! Destiny Awaits!

Two Sundays ago, my senior Pastor, Steve Kim, spoke openly and candidly about our need as Christians to speak up and take a stand for social justice. My pastor’s courage has also freed me up to come out of the proverbial social justice closet and publicly take a stand for a cause, that has been pressing on my heart. Although, Pastor Steve addressed abortion specifically, social justice is not limited to the topic of abortion or the pro-life movement. Social justice covers many areas, such as child labor and human trafficking.

Coincidentally (or not), two of my close friends that live in California have dedicated their lives in the rescuing of women and children that are the victims of sex trafficking. On March 16th, they are packing their bags and moving to Thailand, so they can be “hands on” and personally oversee a rescue home they built for these victims.

Meet Jeremy and Jenifer Kraus. They are the founders and missionaries for Thrive Rescue Home in Pattaya, Thailand.

When you first meet Jeremy Krause, you might confuse him for a wrestler, biker or some crazy bouncer. His beautiful wife, with her brilliant shoulder/arm tattoo is a fitting wife . You might be scared. However, this couple are the warmest, humblest, and friendliest people you could meet. They are the real deal. Before, I go into further detail about their ministry, let me give you some more information about human trafficking.

Human trafficking is the illegal sale of human beings, as like commodities, in order to meet demand for forced labor and commercial sexual slavery. Unfortunately, trafficking in humans is one of the most profitable and lucrative illegal industries of the world. Human trafficking statistics are alarmingly high and have even gone higher in the past decade.

debt bondage: people sold into slavery to pay for debts, but who can never repay the debt through work because of fees or exhorbitantly high interest rates on their loans.

sexual slavery: people sold into slavery in brothels and in prostitution rings.

child trafficking and female trafficking for either of these

This industry is somehow in an indirect way connected to the illegal arms trade and also the illicit drug business. Sex slavery and commercial sexual exploitation constitutes the majority of the demand that drives human trafficking.

Women and children constitute a large proportion of the trafficking victims; this is again driven by the high demand of sexual exploitation and sex slavery. This sex tourism industry flourishes in most developing and third world nations.

In Canada the Royal Canadian Mounted Police estimate that around 700 people are brought into Canada illegally each year mainly for the purpose of sexual slavery and commercial sex trade. They say that this estimate is based on actual historical statistics. Another alarming statistic brought forward by them is that over 2000 persons are brought into the US through Canada illegally.

There are as many as 50,000 persons consisting of women and children brought illegally into the United States from every corner of the world for forced labor and sexual exploitation each year. In 2010, human trafficking statistics showed that over 700,000 women and children have been brought into the states illegally from the year 2000 up to the present.

Those trafficked are often put into forced labor and are forced to work for extended periods of time, sometimes up to sixteen hours without pay. They are also often subjected to beatings, forced sexual relations and forced abortions. Most of these victims end up dead before ever gaining their freedom.

Countries where trafficked victims are most likely to end up are Nigeria, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Brazil, The Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, CANADA and Cambodia. There are also other countries involved either as transit points or points of origin for such victims.

Most victims are duped into believing that they are being employed by a prominent firm abroad. Sometimes women are courted by the trafficker who poses to be a spouse. Once the marriage takes place, they leave for a foreign country where the supposed spouse sells the girl for a high price.

Men and women can both be traffickers with women comprising 45% and men being the remaining 55%. This illegal trade is said to generate about 50% profits in the industrialized economies, 32% in the Asian countries and about 10% from the rest of the world.

The average age of children going into prostitution is said to be around 12-14 years of age. This is according to statistics collected across the globe.

Trafficking of persons within the US has also surfaced occasionally. However, not much research has been conducted to determine the scope of the problem on the state level.

Statistics on trafficking of persons is often unavailable. This is due to the secretive nature of the crime and also the invisibility of the trafficked victims.. The major cause of this problem is the inconsistent definition of the crime and lack of a standard method of data collection. Funding for such data collection is often lacking as well and this leads to poorly collected information. That being said, it is clear that a lot more needs to be done to curb this menace. The current strategies are just not enough.

Global Statistics

Valued at over US$32 billion per year (ILO)

Human trafficking is the second largest and fastest growing criminal industry worldwide

80% of trafficking victims are women and girls

50% of trafficking victims are minors (underage)

42% of those recruiting victims are women

The average age of entry into prostitution or sexual exploitation is 12 years old

Based on those stats, you can see that human trafficking is very relevant to you and it could happen in your own neighborhood and you don’t even know it. It is not just for third world countries, but human trafficking affects all North Americans. If you have a daughter or a wife, this should matter to you!

THRIVE RESCUE HOME

Back to my friends, Jeremy and Jenifer Krause. As I wrote earlier, they are moving to Pattaya, Thailand. This city is known as the “world capital for child sex trafficking.” When my friends first visited the city, they were heartbroken at the heart-wrenching faces of young girls trapped in sex trafficking. This would leave a mark on their hearts forever.

As they walked the streets of Pattaya they thought, “we must do something, no matter the cost. After all, these girls are NOT for sale, they are PRICELESS.”

At Thrive Rescue Home, their specialized restoration of these girls is their heartbeat. The girls receive medical care, counseling, schooling and most importantly, they are cared for and loved.

Here is a video that you must see made by Thrive Rescue Home ==> HERE

Here is their strategy:

RESCUE by working with other NGO’s, government and police task forces.
RESTORE by providing a safe refuge where girls can receive restoration and protection after being rescued from a trafficking situation. We believe these precious girls have the right to a safe home where they can receive healing.

Through the Thrive Rescue Home in Pattaya where girls receive compassion, care and counseling.

RELEASE as a full-spectrum rescue organization and aftercare home we work with local and international agencies in rescuing, restoring and reintegrating girls that have been trafficked back into their families or communities.
RETURN –Through returning a child (if safe) to their home. If it is not safe for a child to return home, we make a long-term commitment in raising the child as our own.

EDUCATE–Children approaching college age will be trained vocationally or sent to college to fulfill their dreams!

You can help. Here are some ways you can aid the movement to end human trafficking:

1. Bring awareness

Here is their website: www.thriverescuehome.org

2. Donate

I am personally fundraising for my friends. If you would like to donate a one time gift to their ministry, please contact me at catalyst@newjoychurch.com, before March 6th. I will be sending them a cheque on the 7th.

We’re all looking to maximize results while minimizing time and effort in the gym. The search for shortcuts has translated into a lot of myths about exercise. Here are a list of exercise myths that just won’t go away!

Fitness Myth #1: Doing crunches or working on an “ab machine” will get rid of belly fat.

Don’t believe everything you hear on those late-night infomercials! Harr says that while an ab-crunching device might “help strengthen the muscles around your midsection and improve your posture,” being able to “see” your abdominal muscles has to do with your overall percentage of body fat. If you don’t lose the belly fat, he says, you won’t see the ab muscles.

But can doing ab crunches help you to lose that belly fat? Experts say no.

You can’t pick and choose areas where you’d like to burn fat. So crunches aren’t going to target weight loss in that area. In general it seems the last area to lose fat is the first area to gain it. Men tend to store fat on the abdominal region whereas women accumulate it around the hips and thighs.

Training either of these areas exclusively (attempting to spot reduce) in the hope of losing fat will simply not work. Fat should instead be lost evenly. Training every body-part with equal intensity coupled with aerobic training remains the most effective means of losing fat. In order to burn fat, you should create a workout that includes both cardiovascular and strength-training elements. This will decrease your overall body fat content.

Fitness Myth #2: Swimming is a great weight loss activity.

While swimming is great for increasing lung capacity, toning muscles, and even helping to burn off excess tension, the surprising truth is that unless you are swimming for hours a day, it may not help you lose much weight. Because the buoyancy of the water is supporting your body, you’re not working as hard as it would if, say, you were moving on your own steam — like you do when you run. Further, it’s not uncommon to feel ravenous when you come out of the water. It may actually cause you to eat more than you normally would, so it can make it harder to stay with an eating plan.

Fitness Myth #3: As long as I go to the gym 30-45 minutes, that gives me a pass to do what I want for rest of the day.

The gym doesn’t negate a bad diet. Also, emerging research suggests that if you’re sedentary most of the day, it may not matter how hard or often you exercise. People who spend more time sitting during their leisure time have an increased risk of death, regardless of daily exercise.

Sitting for hours can shave years off life. In a study of more than 123,000 healthy people, the American Cancer Society found that women who spent more than six hours a day sitting were 40 percent more likely to die sooner than women who sat less. Men who sat more had 20 percent increased risk of death. Essentially, those who sit less, live a longer life than those who don’t.

Fitness Myth #4: Use High Repetitions To Burn Fat.

Research has shown that moderate repetitions (8-12), rather than higher repetitions (20-25) are more effective in terms of fat-loss. To burn fat it requires, on average, 30-40 minutes of continuous aerobic exercise. Tacking on an extra 10 or so repetitions, and thus increasing the set from 30-seconds to 40 seconds will, on this basis, obviously not enhance the fat-burning process.

On the other hand, training with heavy weights and lower reps will build a larger degree of muscle mass and, as a result, stimulate the metabolism and burn more fat over the long term as muscle is a metabolically active tissue.

Fitness Myth #5: Skipping meals or crash dieting is a good way to lose weight.

Starving oneself over a short period of time will not enhance fat-burning. Depriving the body of calories will, in fact, have the opposite effect: muscle degradation and fat-gain.

Fact: Studies show that people who skip breakfast and eat fewer times during the day tend to be heavier than people who eat a healthy breakfast and eat four or five times a day. This may be because people who skip meals tend to feel hungrier later on, and eat more than they normally would. It may also be that eating many small meals throughout the day helps people control their appetites.

Tip: Smaller servings of quality calories (clean food such as chicken, rice, turkey and vegetables) frequently, will more effectively boost the metabolism and contribute to muscle gain (which will also boost the metabolism). Crash diets will lead to frustration and curtail any chance of fat-loss.

Fitness Myth #6: Certain foods, like grapefruit, celery, or cabbage soup, can burn fat and make you lose weight.

Fact: No foods can burn fat. Some foods with caffeine may speed up your metabolism (the way your body uses energy, or calories) for a short time, but they do not cause weight loss.

Tip: The best way to lose weight is to cut back on the number of calories you eat and be more physically active.

Fitness Myth #7: Lifting weights is not good to do if you want to lose weight, because it will make you “bulk up.”

Fact: Lifting weights or doing strengthening activities like push-ups and crunches on a regular basis can actually help you maintain or lose weight. These activities can help you build muscle, and muscle burns more calories than body fat. So if you have more muscle, you burn more calories—even sitting still. Doing strengthening activities 2 or 3 days a week will not “bulk you up.” Only intense strength training, combined with a certain genetic background, can build very large muscles.

You really have to overload those muscles to create bulk and it’s very, very difficult. Women have too much estrogen to build large amounts of bulk. Guys build muscles faster because they have testosterone (that is why women need to take steroids to build crazy muscles). So ladies, don’t fear the barbells. Once again, strength training helps decrease body fat, increase lean muscle mass and burn calories more efficiently.

Tip: In addition to doing at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity (like walking 2 miles in 30 minutes) on most days of the week, try to do strengthening activities 2 to 3 days a week. You can:

lift weights

use large rubber bands (resistance bands)

do push-ups or sit-ups

do household or garden tasks that make you lift or dig

Fitness Myth No. 8: ”Going vegetarian” means you are sure to lose weight and be healthier.

Fact: Research shows that people who follow a vegetarian eating plan, on average, eat fewer calories and less fat than non-vegetarians. They also tend to have lower body weights relative to their heights than non-vegetarians. Choosing a vegetarian eating plan with a low fat content may be helpful for weight loss. But vegetarians—like non-vegetarians—can make food choices that contribute to weight gain, like eating large amounts of high-fat, high-calorie foods or foods with little or no nutritional value.

Vegetarian diets should be as carefully planned as non-vegetarian diets to make sure they are balanced. Nutrients that non-vegetarians normally get from animal products, but that are not always found in a vegetarian eating plan, are:

iron

calcium

vitamin D

vitamin B12

zinc

protein

Vegetarianism

Tip: Choose a vegetarian eating plan that is low in fat and that provides all of the nutrients your body needs. Food and beverage sources of nutrients that may be lacking in a vegetarian diet are listed below.

Iron: cashews, spinach, lentils, garbanzo beans, fortified bread or cereal

Calcium: dairy products, fortified soy-based beverages or fruit juices, tofu made with calcium sulfate, collard greens, kale, broccoli

Vitamin D: fortified foods and beverages including milk, soy-based beverages, fruit juices, or cereal

Vitamin B12: eggs, dairy products, fortified cereal or soy-based beverages, tempeh, miso (tempeh and miso are foods made from soybeans)

Zinc: whole grains (especially the germ and bran of the grain), nuts, tofu, leafy vegetables (spinach, cabbage, lettuce) Protein: eggs, dairy products, beans, peas, nuts, seeds, tofu, tempeh, soy-based burgers.

Fitness Myth #9: Natural or herbal weight loss products are safe and effective.

Fact: A weight loss product that claims to be “natural” or “herbal” is not necessarily safe. These products are not usually scientifically tested to prove that they are safe or that they work. For example, herbal products containing ephedra have caused serious health problems and even death. Newer products that claim to be ephedra-free are not necessarily danger-free, because they may contain ingredients similar to ephedra.

Tip: Talk with your health care provider before using any weight loss product. Some natural or herbal weight loss products can be harmful.

Fitness Myth #10: Our weight is the end all, be all.

Newbies hit the gym, and then weigh themselves every day on the scale. Week-after-week, they see no downward trend on the scale and get impatient. People starting saying, “I haven’t lost any weight. This is pointless, I’m not accomplishing anything.” However, the fact is that after a few months of increased exercise, they are healthier because they’ve reduced risk factors such as blood sugar levels. Even though a person may not be losing weight, his health has improved in ways that might not be measured.

People are often stuck in this paradigm that weight is the ultimate barometer for fitness. They don’t realize the progress they’ve made and give up. Personally, I never step on the scale. I don’t know how much I weigh, nor do I care. I monitor my size by my jeans and how they fit.

The Sensible Approach

Rather than subject oneself to any of the above erroneous practices it would be much wiser to concentrate on a sensible, balanced, approach. By keeping body-fat to a manageable level and losing excess weight over the long-term, greater, more lasting, gains can be made. Some suggested principals for successful fat-loss:

1: Eat Smaller, Frequently Spaced, Meals.

Ok, maybe not this small...:DDD

Eating often will boost the metabolism and stimulate fat loss as long as the meals are relatively low in fat, moderate in carbohydrates and high in protein.

Protein has a positive affect on the metabolism while fat and carbohydrates can impede weight loss if they are eaten in larger amounts. Complex carbohydrates such as brown rice and kumara (sweet potato) are to be chosen in favour of those higher on the glycemic index (sugary foods and carrots for example).

Be sure to limit carbohydrates as the day progresses as they may converted into fat if unused. Six nutritionally dense meals per day, spaced every 2-3 hours, should be the aim. Eating smaller meals on a frequent basis will also ensure one will not go hungry, thus preventing a potential binge.

2: Train With Low-Intensity Longer-Duration Aerobics 3-4 Times-Per-Week.

Low intensity aerobic training (brisk walking for example) directly burns body-fat and stimulates the metabolism to assist weight loss during inactivity. Aerobic training in the morning seems to work best as this tends to target body-fat directly, due to low carbohydrate stores at that time of the day.

3: Train With Weights.

Weight training will build muscle and this will, in turn, indirectly contribute to fat loss. The body will use energy in the form of fat to maintain muscle mass, given the fact that muscle tissue is highly metabolically active.

In theory, the greater the degree of muscle mass one has, the higher their metabolism will be and the easier it will be to lose fat.

4: Set Realistic, Short Term, Fitness Goals.
It is very important to plan for fat-loss. Failure to do so will result in inferior results. One should buy their groceries, set their training schedule and conduct their life with the goal of fitness and health in mind.

Important variables to remember are the achievability and feasibility of the goal. For example, someone a 100-pounds overweight would not plan to lose this weight in several weeks. It would be more effective to plan over the long-term and make steady improvements.

5: Use iPhone, iPod, iPad, or whatever kind of APPS to help you attain your fitness goals!

Hand in hand with goal-setting is progress charting, but who wants to tote a notebook around the gym. Luckily, you don’t have to. Just download an app on your android or iPhone.

Here are some good ones:

Cost: Free

Pros: Won’t cost you a dime; provides a simple way to track calories ingested in the form of food and expended in the form of exercise; has a fairly extensive library of standard and brand-name foods with accurate calorie, carb, fiber, fat, and protein values, all of which are trackable within the app; lets you set weight-loss goals and track over time.

Cons: Calorie budget and burn amounts per exercise aren’t necessarily accurate for all users, as the program doesn’t let you input your activity level or body fat percentage; certain foods have limited input amounts (for example, only cups when you might like to enter weight in grams instead); inputting data can become tedious over time.

Good for: Diligent record keepers who are serious about losing weight, or anyone who wants to gauge his or her overall calorie/carb/fat/protein/fiber consumption for reference in health and weight loss.

2. Fitness Pro

Cost: Free

Pros: This app is easier to carry around than a fitness magazine and offers the added bonus of an electronic log for your workouts; offers tips for newbies on types of cardio and proper form; lets you select exercises by individual muscle; some exercises can be done at home, with minimal equipment; includes a handful of preprogrammed routines and you can create your own as well.

Cons: All of the included routines require hard-core gym equipment; the exercises are pretty standard, so there will be no surprises for the seasoned fitness fanatic.

Good for: Fitness magazine faithful who are looking for a more pocket-friendly and flexible way to add new exercises and routines to their workouts; this app is also a good free option to be used in conjunction with Lose It for getting into better shape.

3. GymGoal ABC

Cost: $0.99

Pros: The free version offers 280 exercises with animations, and you can add your own images to any exercise; includes a variety of calculators, such as for target heart rate, BMI, BMR, and body fat percentage; an integrated body map of muscles lets you hone in on the specific area you would like to work and provides exercises designed for that muscle group.

Cons: As the name suggests, all the workouts are geared for use in a gym, with all the equipment you would find therein; there are very few workout routines and no cardio offerings; graphical interface seems dated.

Good for: Gym newbies who are looking for proper instruction on how to lift and use gym equipment without injury, or cardio fiends who want to add specified muscle toning to their routines. If you want to record and track workouts, a full version is available for $2.99.

4. FitnessBuilder

Cost: $9.99

Pros: FitnessBuilder comes with a massive library of targeted fitness routines as well as individual exercises; lets you narrow options by your location (gym, hotel room) and goal (core, flexibility); tracks completed workouts by date; includes a variety of calculators and stat trackers; offers a workout builder tool for easily tailoring your own routines.

Cons: It’s expensive for an app, and it would be nice if there was a way to automatically play (properly timed) slideshows of routines to eliminate the need to swipe through each exercise by hand–an audio guide would be even better; it’s not a simple app, and the complexity means it will take time and patience to use it to the fullest; the form used by some of the models is not perfect.

Good for: Experienced fitness freaks, dedicated exercisers who want a large variety of fitness routines with all the bells and whistles available in the palm of their hands, or anyone who wants to get in tip-top shape but can’t afford a personal trainer.5.

Staying fit isn’t just about watching your caloric intake and making sure you hit the gym, streets, or weights at least three to five times per week; it’s also about the overall health of your mind and body. Just counting calories may not be the end-all, be-all when it comes to being in top shape–you may also want to note that drinking cloudy (or pulpy) juice is better for you because it has more antioxidants than the processed stuff. And keeping your brain healthy and happy (by volunteering, for example) makes it more likely you’ll stick with that gym routine. These are just a couple of tidbits offered by the Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Tip of the Day app.

6. MiMeals

Meal planning and fitness go hand-in-hand; if you have all your meals for the week planned out in advance, you’re more likely to stick to the caloric budget you’ve laid out for yourself. Plus, you’re eliminating the stress of having to scrounge together a healthy meal for dinner off-the-cuff–and you’re less likely to order out at the last minute (it’s extremely difficult to accurately estimate the calories and nutrients in restaurant food). And did I mention you’re probably saving money to boot? MiMeals includes meal planning, recipe storage, and a tickable grocery list feature in order to make it all easier for you, and it’ll only cost you a couple of bucks.

7. iTreadmill

Cost: $0.99

Pros: The app accurately tracks steps, distance, and average speed while in a hand, strapped to an arm, or carried in a pocket or purse; sensor and stride calibrators help you ensure the utmost accuracy; includes a calorie counter and a pacer for setting speed goals.

Cons: The calorie counter is based on weight alone, so it may not be entirely accurate; would be a better treadmill replicator if there was a sensor for detecting incline.

Good for: Walkaholics who constantly carry their devices on them and are trying to reach a step-a-day goal, and couch potatoes who need a nonthreatening way to ease back into fitness.

Attention single ladies…(Single guys, you can read your list after the ladies section, below) dating is not a recreational sport, it’s a BIG DEAL and you are way more valuable than you could imagine. There is no such thing as the perfect guy, but you should consider the following warning signs and probably should not date him if…

#1 – He Uses The Phrase, “The Ball Is Now In Your Court!”

This usually means that he is tired of pursuing you…and so he is going to abdicate his role as the man and actually wants you to pursue him! DON’T DO IT!! You are worth the pursuit and if you wind up pursuing him now then he is, most likely, not going to pursue you after you get married. (And GREAT marriages always include pursuit…by the man!)

#2 – He Says He Has “Issues” But They Will Get Better Once You Are Married.

Marriage is a magnifier–period! If he is addicted to porn now it’s not going to disappear when you get married. If he has racked up a massive amount of debt on credit cards and is unwilling to address it and make changes then you are headed for a financial train wreck…and unfortunately bankruptcy and divorce LOVE to hang out together!

#3 – You Have To Tell Him To “Stop” Because He Is Making You Uncomfortable!

Like us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?channel_url=https%3A%2F%2Fs-static.ak.fbcdn.net%2Fconnect%2Fxd_proxy.php%3Fversion%3D3%23cb%3Df8740262c%26origin%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.christianpost.com%252Ff10aff0b68%26relation%3Dparent.parent%26transport%3Dpostmessage&extended_social_context=false&href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpages%2FThe-Christian-Post%2F41093998634&layout=button_count&locale=en_US&node_type=link&sdk=joey&send=true&show_faces=false&width=150

He should NEVER put you in that position. He is not struggling for purity if he isn’t fighting for it!

#4 – The Closer You Get To The Wedding The More Uninterested In You He Seems!

If he is slacking off in his efforts to make you feel special today…it’s not going to get better after the ceremony tomorrow!

#5 – You Only Know Him Through An Online Relationship

Anyone can be anyone online! You have no idea who that person really is until you have spent an extended amount of time with then. How do they handle anger? Hurt? Disappointment? DO NOT allow yourself to be swept away by a guy you don’t really know!!!

#6 – You Have To Talk Yourself Into Being With Him (enough said!)

#7 – You Have To Drag Him To Church (enough said!)

#8 – He Lies To You

Trust is HUGE…and, ONCE AGAIN please understand that it won’t “get better” when you get married!!! If he does not love and respect you to tell you to truth about him now…then you can’t trust him, period. And a relationship that is not built on trust will crash!

A few weeks ago I did a post challenging ladies to have incredibly high standards (entitled, “You Probably Shouldn’t Date Him If…”)…this week I want to challenge the guys to have incredibly high standards as well and let you know that you probably should not date her if…

#1 – She Cries & Pouts Every Time She Does Not Get Her Way.

She will call herself “emotional;” however, reality is that she is a manipulator because she knows when she gets “emotional” that you will do whatever she wants.

#2 – She Is A Gossip.

Be VERY careful if, after you have spent time with friends and she pretends to absolutely have a blast while with them…but the second you two get alone she begins to BLAST them by pointing out all of their imperfections and shortcomings (which is insecurity!) AND…trust me on this, if she does this to them she is very likely to one day do it to you when she gets around her friends who love to talk bad about their husbands.

#3 – She’s Lazy.

A woman who has no job, refuses to work, lives with her parents and sleeps until noon is not what the Bible describes in Proverbs 31:13-19.

#4 – She’s Needy.

If she calls you multiple times a day asking you is everything ok…and you reply yes and ask why is she asking she says, “Well, you haven’t called me.” A lady who needs you to always check in on her and call her has already placed you in the role of her functional savior…and you will be crushed under that weight!!!

#5 – She Is Neck Deep In Debt With No Plan To Get Out…And She Still Continues To Go Shopping Because “It Calms Her Down.”

Proverbs 31:16 is very clear that a godly woman is wise with her money. Everyone has made a financial mistake or two; however, if she refuses to acknowledge this and continues to dig a deeper hole then you are in trouble.

#6 – She Is Rude To You.

If she does not show you respect before you are married, then she will not be able to after you are married either.

#7 – You Can Not Fall In Love With Her Heart.

Don’t get me wrong…looks matter! Lucretia (my wife) is hot…but “hot” is not a reason to either pursue or stay in a relationship. In fact…hell is hot…so I’m not sure “hot” should be the only qualification for a future wife.

I Peter 3:1-4 talks about a woman who is beautiful!!! It’s not all about how she appears, but rather her character. If you can’t trust her completely and you begin to notice that she is not who she appears to be…you might want to call things off for a while.

#8 – Everything That Doesn’t Always Go Her Way Is Always a Crisis & Brings On A Meltdown.

If this is the case she has not fully learned to trust in the Lord…she has control issues and as long as she is “sovereign over her universe” then all is well. This type of attitude will not lead to a healthy relationship because she will seek to control you rather than begging Jesus for Him to have His way in your life!

“When we are feeling stressed, lonely, or depressed, we seek various avenues to try to console ourselves or to alleviate some of the misery.

COMFORT FOOD

Some people turn to food for refuge. When you are feeling stressed or depressed, there is nothing like some comfort food to soothe the weary soul. Prior to the 21st century, the phrase “comfort food” didn’t even exist. However, with its increasing use in the 21st century, likely a response to increasingly stressful living conditions, the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary added “comfort food” to its list of 1997 entries, defining it as “food that comforts or affords solace; hence any food (frequently with a high sugar or carbohydrate content) that is associated with childhood or with home cooking.” Also, ”food prepared in a traditional style having a usually nostalgic or sentimental appeal.” In other words, comfort food may be best thought of as any food consumed by a person during periods of stress that evokes good mood, good times, and positive emotions.

However, comfort foods differ from person to person, and is usually based on the culture the are brought up in. Here are some examples of comfort foods from around the globe.

MY FOOD MY REFUGE

Personally, when I am stressed or upset, there are foods that cheer me up as well…and it is definately not salad. Here is snapshot of foods that provide me comfort and refuge when I am down:

1. My mom’s “Rou Geng Mein”

This very common Taiwanese dish is called “Ba Genh” in Taiwanese, or “Ro Geng Mian” in Mandarin, and consists of pork and fish paste nuggets in a thick soup flavored with black vinegar (or Worcestershire sauce), white pepper, mushrooms, and lots of cilantro.

When I am feeling sick physically or emotionally, my mom just knows what to do. She used to make this when I was a kid and she’ll pull this dish out if she senses that I am feeling sad.

2. Singapore Curry Chicken with White Rice (when you are depressed, no one is eating brown rice!)

3. Spaghetti and Meatballs

4. Taiwanese Pork Belly Burger (Gua Boa)

————————————————————

COMFORT PEOPLE

Some people don’t like to turn to food because it just makes them fat and even more depressed. So, when we need to be comforted and encouraged, we seek out “comfort people”. This can be defined as people that you can trust and go to when things are falling apart. I have comfort people in my life. The person I seek out the most when i need to hear an encouraging word or two is my brother, Vincent.

My brother and I have always been close. However, our relationship has had to transition over the years. He is approximately nine years younger than me, so he hardly could be any help when he was younger. I had to be the protector and the older sister watching out and worrying for him. My parents were very busy when we were younger, so I had to be the substitute parent. I went to parent teacher meetings, helped him with homework, and other stuff that a parent would do. Please don’t read this and think I am complaining. I enjoyed every minute of it. Here are some pictures of us when we were younger.

However, as he grew up and slowly became a man, I have seen that he has also grown into a pillar of strength for me. He is the person that “gets” me. He is the person I know who would drop everything to help me if I needed the help. He is the person that knows just what to say when I am feeling depressed or when I am stressed. He is the person I can count on if I need to get things done. Moreover, he is the person that doesn’t judge me and does not expect anything from me. He doesn’t care what I do or what my title is. I can truly be myself around him. I know Vincent loves me for me.

Like most people, pastors have good days and bad days too. Bad, not as in “unlucky” stuff happening, but bad, as in “bad mood”. When I get in a bad mood or when I am stressed, I tend to be very sarcastic and just kind of moody. On the worst of the bad days, my tongue is my achilles heel. I am very often tempted to lash out, like my tongue were a scrourge, ripping into the skin of my victim and gauging chunks of flesh with my words (I am exaggerating…I HOPE! ) The worst part, it is for no good reason. However, this is not good at all…obviously. People come to talk to a pastor to get comforted, not critisiced. They come for encouragement, not exasperated looks. They want to be built up, not knocked down a few notches. A place of hope and sanctuary, not despair and exposure.

I need help! (You probably do too. Maybe your not so abrasive as I am, but you probably not doing anything to be a place of refuge…so you need help…haha. Read on.) So where do I begin? How can a person become a place of refuge for those around them? How do I become a city of refuge if I wanted to intentionally do so? No better place to start, then the Old Testament, where we find the beginnings of actual “Cities of Refuge”. Perhaps, this story could give us some insight or some pointers on how to be cities of refuge for the people in our lives:

Very simply, Cities of refuge in The Bible were designated places where someone who had accidentally killed another person could go to escape the vengeance of outraged relatives or friends. There, they could safely await trial to officially determine their guilt or innocence. They were not places to escape justice, but rather places that saw justice was done. The “killer” would remain in that city, until he stands before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest. Only until the high priest dies, then is the slayer allowed to safely return to his own city. There are some particular things you need to know about these cities of refuge:

1. Easy Access:

When you are running from avengers, the worse thing that can happen is if you can’t get to the city of refuge because there things blocking the way. So, each city of refuge had clear and marked road allowing “runners” to get to the city without any hindrance. Furthermore, each city of refuge from any part of the land was only a half a day’s run away. This allowed easy access and safety was readily at hand.

2. Clear Signs and Directions: Another bad thing that can happen when you are trying to escape for your life is not know where you are going or getting lost along the way. Thus, cities of refuge would have signs stating to the “killer” where to go.

3. A place of Hope for Israelites, but also for strangers who sojourned among them. It was open to all, not just the Israelite; no one needs to fear that they would be turned away from their place of refuge in their time of need.

The interesting thing about these cities of refuge is its similarities with the character of Jesus. The Bible applies this picture of the city of refuge to the believer finding refuge in God on more than one occasion: Psalm 46:1: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. More than 15 other times, the Psalms speak of God as our refuge. Also, Hebrews 6:18: That by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.

Furthermore, Check this out these other prophetic pictures of Jesus seen in the characteristics of the cities of refuge:

Both Jesus and the cities of refuge are within easy reach of the needy person; they were of no use unless someone could get to the place of refuge.

Both Jesus and the cities of refuge became a place where the one in need would live; you didn’t come to a city of refuge in time of need just to look around.

Both Jesus and the cities of refuge are the only alternative for the one in need; without this specific protection, they will be destroyed.

Both Jesus and the cities of refuge provide protection only within their boundaries; to go outside means death.

With both Jesus and the cities of refuge, full freedom comes with the death of the High Priest.

Since we are to become more like Christ, then we must ask ourselves the question, are we being cities of refuge to the people around us? This week, the Holy Spirit is really convicting me in this area. In the last little while, I haven’t been so vigilant with the words I say and my attitude. I have let my guard down and the enemy has used it . As salt and light, we are to be human representation of our heavenly sanctuary, Jesus. Ultimately, He is our refuge and he is our strength, but we have been called to carry out that mission and be his hands and feet while we are here. What are your hands and feet doing? Are they pushing away and kicking? Or are they embracing and accepting?

Upon reflecting on my relationship with my brother, I hope I am a city of refuge for him and many others. I hope people feel that have clear access to me. I hope I am living a life of purity and truth, so they are not confused by my actions and know where to go. I hope I am a place of encouragement that is open to all and I hope that every person that I encounter can find a place of hope when they are in my company. How about you? Do you have a place of refuge? Are you source of refuge for those around you?

Where is your sanctuary? Who are your places of refuge? Are you a source of refuge for people?

——————————————

Intro

As if dieting wasn’t hard enough. Even if you have the will power to stick to a diet plan, you may come across much misinformation that could prevent your diet from being truly effective.

Here are some common myths that could derail your diet plans.

Myth #1: As Long As You’re Eating Healthy Foods, Calories Don’t Matter.

Truth: Not necessarily. Whole-wheat pasta (or bread or, um, pie crust) has just as many calories as “regular.” Same goes for brown and white rice. Avocados, nuts and olive oil deliver heart-healthy fats—and significant calories. Red wine and dark chocolate are full of antioxidants, but if you indulge every day without accounting for their calories, you’re likely to gain weight. Upshot: Pay close attention to calorie counts of all foods (OK, maybe not plain steamed broccoli) so that “health halos” don’t lead your eating astray.

Myth #2: Low-fat or fat-free food will have significantly fewer calories.

Just because a food is labeled as being low in fat does not necessarily mean it’s low in calories — because fat can be replaced by other nutrients that provide calories, such as protein, starch and sugar. For example, according to a food guide published by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a small, low-fat blueberry muffin has 131 calories, while a regular blueberry muffin of the same size has 138 calories. Eating low-fat foods will not automatically lead to weight loss. This is especially true if you end up eating larger portions of low-fat foods.

Myth #3: You Can Lose 10 Pounds in 2 Weeks.

Truth: You probably can lose 10 pounds in two weeks if you crash-diet, but you’ll feel terrible—and most of the weight will return once you start eating normally. You probably can lose 10 pounds in two weeks if you crash diet, to truly lose 1 pound, you need to “eliminate” 3,500 calories—the amount stored in a pound of fat—by eating less and moving more. If you cut 500 calories (or cut 300 and burn 200 through exercise) every single day of the week, you’ll lose about a pound a week. And that’s real weight loss.

Myth #4: If You Exercise, You Can Eat As Much As You Want.

Truth: Unless you’re working out like an Olympic athlete, to lose weight you’ll still need to keep an eye on how many calories you’re eating. “Calories in” add up much more quickly than “calories out.” Consider this: two medium cookies cost you about 400 calories. To burn 400 calories, the average person needs to run or walk 4 miles. So essentially, “a moment on the lips” can mean an hour or more on the treadmill. Bottom line: Unless you’re working out like an Olympic athlete, to lose weight you’ll still need to keep an eye on how many calories you’re eating.

Daily exercises and an active lifestyle can offer many health benefits beyond weight loss. However, just because you have been slaving on the treadmill for two hours doesn’t mean you should overindulge. Your energy intake will have to match your energy expenditure in order not to gain or lose weight. This is a common misconception, and many people replace the energy they burn off during exercise with a sugar-containing sports drink, which is not a good idea if you are trying to lose weight.

Myth #5: It’s Always a Good Idea to Go with the Salad.

Truth: Salads trip up many dieters. Most of us could use more vegetables—so what’s not to love? In a word, toppings. The pecans and Gorgonzola cheese on Panera Bread’s Fuji Apple Chicken Salad (580 calories, 30 grams fat, 7 grams saturated fat), for instance, propel it into double-cheeseburger territory. A McDonald’s double cheeseburger has 440 calories, 23 grams fat, 11 grams saturated fat.

Myth #6: You should expect to be hungry while dieting.

Truth: If you cut calories randomly, you’re probably going to feel hungry. On the other hand, if you plan out your day so that you’re replenishing yourself with nutritious foods every three or four hours, you’ll likely feel quite satisfied on significantly fewer calories. Aim to include a source of lean protein (e.g., skim milk, turkey) and fiber (e.g., hummus, carrots) in every meal and snack.

Myth #7: A sports drink that is high in vitamins and nutrients is a healthier alternative to soda.

It’s easy to think of sports drinks as the healthy alternative at the vending machine, but that’s not always true. For example, a bottle of VitaminWater contains 13 grams of sugar and 50 calories per serving. However, each bottle contains 2.5 servings, so if you chug the whole bottle after a workout, you’ve taken in 125 calories. By comparison, one can of regular Coca-Cola has 140 calories.

Sports drinks may contain a good supply of vitamins and minerals, but it can still be high in sugar and calories. And some of the added vitamins and minerals may also not be required if you are already eating a healthy diet.

WHAT YOU CAN START DOING RIGHT NOW…

Most people have a hard time over-hauling their eating and lifestyle habits. However, what you can do to start on the right track is to make small changes in your eating by shaving 100 calories here and there. Here are some ideas, as to how to shave 100 calories from you meals:

100 Calorie Saver #1: Order your coffee with nonfat milk

Order your coffee with nonfat milk instead of cream and sugar. For a 12-ounce size, this will free up about 100 calories. If you need a little sweetness (and are OK with consuming artificial sweeteners), you can add a little Splenda.

100 Calorie Saver #2: Trade in your Coke (any pop) for soda water mixed with some slices of oranges

A can of regular coke has 140 calories. While you may argue that Coke Zero or diet soda has zero calories, studies have shown that diet sodas lead to weight gain, sugar cravings, and accumulation of belly fat. Also, a brand new study just released in February 2012, has linked diet soda to higher risk of stroke and heart attack (see article—> HERE). So, ditch the pop and drink water. However, if you are craving a carbonated beverage, try mixing some seltzer water (Perrier or San Pellegrino) and slice some fresh oranges or lemon, for a refreshing and bubbly beverage.

100 Calorie Saver #3: Ditch the chips, have popcorn

Some snack chips aren’t so bad for your health but you do have to account for their calories. A 1.5-oz. bag of SunChips, for example, has 210 calories. If you have 3 cups of air-popped popcorn (a whole grain!), you’ll cut the calorie count in half (about 90 calories).

100 Calorie Saver #4: Lose the top piece of bread on your sandwich

An open-face sandwich is often just as satisfying as one with double the bread. Isn’t the filling the best part anyway? Here is a recipe to get you started:

Grilled Eggplant Parmesan Sandwich

From EatingWell: September/October 2008

Our healthier eggplant Parmesan sandwich uses tender, smoky grilled eggplant instead of fried, so it has a fraction of the fat and calories. To make these sandwiches a cinch to prepare, make sure to have all your ingredients ready before you head out to the grill.

4 servings | Active Time: 45 minutes | Total Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

1 large eggplant, (1 1/4-1 1/2 pounds), cut into 12 1/4-inch-thick rounds

Canola or olive oil cooking spray

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons finely shredded Parmesan, or Asiago cheese

1/2 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

4 small pieces focaccia bread, or rustic Italian bread

2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil

5 ounces baby spinach

1 cup crushed tomatoes, preferably fire-roasted

3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil, divided

Preparation

Preheat grill to medium-high.

Place eggplant rounds on a baking sheet and sprinkle with salt. Coat both sides lightly with cooking spray. Combine Parmesan (or Asiago) and mozzarella in a small bowl. Brush both sides of focaccia (or bread) with oil.

Place spinach in a large microwave-safe bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and punch several holes in the wrap. Microwave on High until wilted, 2 to 3 minutes. Combine tomatoes and 2 tablespoons basil in a small microwave-safe bowl. Cover and microwave until bubbling, about 2 minutes.

Place all your ingredients on the baking sheet with the eggplant and take it to the grill. Grill the eggplant slices until brown and soft on both sides, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Grill the bread until toasted, about 1 minute per side. Return the eggplant and bread to the baking sheet. Reduce grill heat to medium.

Place 1 eggplant round on top of each slice of bread. Layer 1 tablespoon tomatoes, 1 tablespoon wilted spinach and 1 tablespoon cheese on each slice of eggplant. Repeat with the remaining eggplant, sauce, spinach and cheese. Sprinkle each stack with some of the remaining basil. Place the baking sheet on the grill, close the lid and grill until the eggplant stack is hot and the cheese is melted, 5 to 7 minutes.

“Fall down seven times; get up eight.” – Japanese Proverb

Among the greatest stories ever told, none pulls more sweetly at the heartstrings than the one about the Comeback Kid. The fall from grace followed by the rise to glory. The hero down in the count or left in the dust, then making the come-from-behind move at the last minute, to end victoriously!

Most of the world’s greatest people—those who have achieved the pinnacle of success in their chosen fields–have known what it’s like to take a great fall. However, history remembers them because they refused to stay down. Instead, they picked themselves back up again, and kept going. Below you’ll find some remarkable comeback stories.

Here is a list of 7 Great Comeback Stories (in random order):

1. Robert Downey Jr.

Topping the list is, of course, Robert Downey Jr. His is perhaps the greatest Hollywood comeback story of all time. In the late ‘80s, Downey was a promising young actor turning in noteworthy performances in movies like Less Than Zero and Soapdish. He even earned an Oscar nomination for Chaplin in 1992.

But drugs, alcohol and jail time sidelined the actor and by 2000, it looked like his career in Hollywood was done. Downey managed to pull himself back by cleaning up and taking small roles in big films or big roles in small films. In 2008 he starred in Iron Man, one of the most successful superhero films of all time and now he is one of Hollywood’s highest paid actors.

2. Lasse Virén

Lasse Virén, a Finnish police officer turned long-distance runner, entered the 1972 Summer Olympics at Munich as a dark horse. In the twelfth lap of the 10,000 meter final, Virén got tangled up with another runner and he fell. However, although most people would have stayed down, Virén got right up again and he kept running. He caught up with the leading pack after losing about 20 to 30 meters. Then, he won the race and a gold medal.

And it doesn’t end there. In those same Olympic games Virén not only won the 10,000 meter race, but he won the 5,000 meter race as well. This is known as accomplishing “the double”. Then, in the 1976 Summer Olympics celebrated in Montreal, he again won both events, coined later as the “double double”.

Just because you fall, it doesn’t mean that you’re out of the game. Get back up again, dust yourself off, and keep going.

You watch him in action—>HERE

3. Greg Louganis

Greg Louganis is to diving, what Baryshnikov is to ballet, and what Michael Jordan is to basketball. In the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Louganis won gold medals in both the springboard and the tower diving events. Then, in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the unthinkable happened: Louganis hit his head on the springboard on his ninth dive of the Olympic preliminaries; he fell clumsily into the water.

If Louganis wanted to complete the preliminaries and qualify for the finals the next day, he would have to perform another dive shortly after he hit his head. With temporary sutures in his scalp wound, just 35 minutes after hitting his head, Louganis mounted the board while the crowd that was present applauded. He then launched into a difficult dive, and executed it almost perfectly.

When he was done for the day, Louganis went to a hospital and his sutures were replaced by five mattress stitches. The next day, Louganis showed up for the finals, and he won a gold medal. A week later, in the finals of the platform competition, Louganis nailed the most difficult dive in his program and won another gold medal. He became the second athlete to win double diving gold medals in two Olympics.

Louganis overcame the fear of hitting his head on the board once again, and he kept going in spite of the pain. Today he’s still regarded by most as the best diver that has ever lived.

You can watch his story—>HERE

4. Steve Jobs

The story of Steve Jobs is one of grit and determination. Along with good friend Steve Wozniak, Jobs started Apple in his parents’ garage and saw his fledgling technology company reinvent computing. In 1977, the two Steves gave us “Apple II” – the world’s first PC complete with colour graphics and keyboard. However, the years of tremendous success gave way to troubled times.

To revive the fortunes of the company, Jobs introduced the Apple Macintosh in 1984, the first commercially success PC with a graphical user interface controlled with a mouse which sold over 400,000 devices in its first year of production. Jobs had previously convinced then-President/CEO of Pepsi Co John Scully to become Apple’s new CEO.

However, the man whom Jobs had personally handpicked for the CEO position turned against him during internal board struggles. Divested of his duties by the board of directors, Jobs resigned from Apple in 1985 and went on to found NeXT Computer, a company that specialised in educational computing. NeXT experienced moderate levels of success in the scientific and academic fields; however, Apple Computer was crumbling with falling sales and ailing fortunes. Jobs also created the computer animation company Pixar, which would later partner with Disney to create successful 3D movies such as Toy Story and Finding Nemo.

Eleven years after being ousted from the company, Apple bought NeXT Computer and re-elected Jobs to Apple’s board. Steve’s second stint at the company would not only turn Apples fortunes around but would cement his reputation as Technology’s Greatest Comeback Kid. As CEO, Jobs returned Apple to profitability cutting funding for what he deemed were useless products and concentrating on the iMac, boosting sales significantly. And we have all witnessed the recent phenomenal increase in innovative products: the iPods, the iPads and the iPhones, which along with robust sales of iMacs and MacBooks ensures over $17 billion in revenues. Jobs will always be missed not only by Apple aficionados but technology lovers the world over for his resilient genius.

5. Lance Armstrong

The Lance Armstrong comeback story has been celebrated for good reason. His comeback has inspired millions of people. His “LiveStrong” campaign in partnership with Nike has motivated thousands of people to overcome cancer and other challenges. The LiveStrong Foundation has raised over 325 million dollars for cancer research.

At age sixteen he became a pro triathlete and by nineteen he had won two national sprint course triathlon championships. Then at twenty he became the United States Amateur Cycling Champion. One year later he won his first professional race as a member of Team Motorola. At age twenty-one he became the youngest cyclist to ever win the UCI Road World Championship and by twenty-five was one of the world’s best cyclists.

However, that same year he was diagnosed with Stage Three testicular cancer. The cancer spread to his lungs, abdomen and brain. Armstrong took an active role in educating himself about cancer. Armed with knowledge, support, and confidence he undertook an aggressive treatment. After undergoing surgery where the diseased testicle was removed his doctor gave him less than a forty percent chance to live. Armstrong then had his brain tumors removed and amazingly, by 1998, his cancer had gone into complete remission. With his cancer in remission Armstrong began his comeback. His workouts were legendary for their difficulty and they launched him out of his setback.

Not only did he survive cancer, but his greatest accomplishments as an athlete have come since his recovery. Before being diagnosed with cancer he had only won three stages of the Tour de France and had never won the entire race. His comeback began with a fourth place finish in a race in Spain in 1998. In 1999 he entered the Tour de France and he miraculously won it just two years after cancer surgery. As impressive as that win would be it was just the first of seven straight races that he would win. No one in history had ever won seven straight Tour de France titles and at that point the comeback was complete. After his final 2005 Tour de France victory he announced his retirement.

6. Abraham Lincoln

Many consider Lincoln to be the greatest President in the history of the United States. He led the country through its greatest moral and military crisis. He essentially saved the country from destruction and directed it toward restoration. But, he went through his fair share of troubles and failures.

Here is a timeline of his failures and his bounce backs:

1816- His family was forced out of their home. He had to work to support them.

1818-His mother died.

18310-Failed in business.

1832-Ran for state legislature – lost.

l832-Also lost his job – wanted to go to law school but couldn’t get in.

1833-Borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off this debt.

1834-Ran for state legislature again – won.

1835-Was engaged to be married, sweetheart died and his heart was broken.

1836-Had a total nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months.

1838-Sought to become speaker of the state legislature – defeated.

1840-Sought to become elector – defeated.

1843-Ran for Congress – lost.

1846-Ran for Congress again – this time he won – went to Washington and did a good job.

1848-Ran for re-election to Congress – lost.

1849-Sought the job of land officer in his home state – rejected.

1854-Ran for Senate of the United States – lost.

1856-Sought the Vice-Presidential nomination at his party’s national convention – get less than 100 votes.

1858-Ran for U.S. Senate again – again he lost.

1860-Elected president of the United States.

He had many great accomplishments that solidify his place in American history and reveal the greatness of his comeback. His Gettysburg Address is the most quoted speech in American history. The Emancipation Proclamation freed all slaves and stands as one of the greatest acts of moral leadership in history. His reelection in 1864 confirmed that his continued leadership was vital to the country. His approach and attitude toward the defeated Southern states helped reunite the nation. Without Lincoln, the United States would look very different today. What he accomplished considering his many setbacks mark his comeback as one of the greatest of all time.

7. Joshua, Son of Nun

Joshua started off quite well. He was one of Israelite spies that came back with a good report. He was the guy that lead the Israelites to cross the Jordan and to defeat the city of Jericho. However, after the whole Achan and Ai (they got demolished by a small city) situation, the Israelites’ reputation among other nations began to diminish, in that, the surrounding nations weren’t so fearful of them anymore. THen, Joshua’s big mistake came when he made a covenant with one of these foreign nations (he was instructed by God, not to). Yes, he was tricked into it, but ignorance cannot be an excuse. Joshua should have taken the opportunity to ask for more guidance and counsel. Anyway, rather ignoring the situation or making the situation worse by breaking the covenant with the Gibeonites, he honored the covenant. Joshua chose to humble himself and to choose to live in integrity, right now…ASAP. Long story short, God made the sun stand still and Joshua went on to win the battle against the other nations that banded against him. So, his present obedience mattered much more than his past disobedience. Due to his quick change of mind (repentance), God accelerated his destiny and their “no way out” became their best way out.

8. The Greatest Comeback of all time? (I’ll get back to that in a bit)

~

Ways To Make A Great Comeback

We all mess up from time to time, that is to be expected. But, how we respond to when we mess up is what counts. Here are some tips on how to make the greatest comeback of all time when you screw up:

1. Don’t Cover it Up

Whether you spot your own slip-up or someone else brings it to your attention, there’s only one thing to do when the mistake is discovered: own up. Honesty goes a long way, but trying to cover it up—or worse, doing something shadier to cover the cover up, will usually come back to bite you. Compounding a mistake with another mistake will lead away from any sort of redemption. And the sooner you take action, the better: Dragging your feet probably won’t fix things, but taking action immediately might. More importantly, describe how you’ll avoid making a similar mistake in the future. You can start wrong, but you can end up right.

2. Take Ownership of Your Mistake.

You’re no longer in grade school. Trying to blame other people makes you look unprofessional, diminishing the opinion that others have of you. Conversely (and paradoxically), taking responsibility and admitting your mistake can win you respect. The people around you might end up thinking, “You know, even though [your name] messed up, it took a lot of character to admit it. [Your name] is a real stand-up person, and someone who can be counted on.”

If you want to be a leader, you need to know how to take responsibility for all your actions, even the wrong ones. According to Justin Menkes’ book Better Under Pressure, truly great leaders don’t blame others when things go wrong. They instead have a high “sense of agency,” which is “the degree to which people attribute their circumstances and the outcomes they experience to being within their own control.”

3. Fix it if you can, and tell your leader.

Don’t be a “quiet fixer.” Mistakes often have side effects, and pretending that it didn’t happen is dangerous. In this Harvard Business Review interview, former Toyota chairman Katsuaki Watanabe stated, “Hidden problems are the ones that become serious threats eventually. If problems are revealed for everyone to see, I will feel reassured. Because once problems have been visualized, even if our people didn’t notice them earlier, they will rack their brains to find solutions to them.”

4. Reflect on the mistake.

Think about what caused it, and what you did that contributed to the situation. You can’t learn anything from external factors, so forget about them (see #2: you are building a high sense of agency). What can you do differently? This may be easier to do when some time has passed, especially if the mistake and its aftermath were particularly painful or embarrassing. Consider former US Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara. Widely vilified for his role in the Vietnam War, it took him 30 years before he wrote a memoir, In Retrospect, in which he finally came to terms with the consequences of his decisions.

5. Address the root cause.

If you systematically reflect on mistakes, you will realize there are patterns in your performance that contribute to these errors. And once you realize that, you are well on the way to fixing that pattern. For example, when I was in high school and university, I had a hard time going to class, missed many appointments, and often showed up late. One day, God really spoke to me about time and my stewardship on time. He showed me that if I keep people waiting or miss an appointment (for no good reason) I am dishonoring the other person and I am improperly stewarding their time. This really convicted me and since then, I do whatever it takes to make all my appointments and to be on time. I have three calendar apps, and four alarm clock apps, so I never miss an appointment and I am never late (I am not perfect at this, but I try my best).

6. Stop Looking Back

Learning from the past can help prevent repeat mistakes. However, don’t confuse learning from the past with dwelling on the past. The latter involves endless self-recrimination and often self-pity, neither of which helps resolve the situation. If you find yourself dwelling on the mistake in this manner, stop it right now.

Adopting these practices may not make mistakes any less embarrassing, but it will help prevent disasters and ensure that you don’t make the same mistake twice. And won’t that allow you to sleep a little easier?

AND THE GREATEST COMEBACK KID OF ALL TIME….

Jesus Christ

Jesus was the most important person who ever lived. His life, death and resurrection literally changed the course of human history. He experienced the ultimate setback and he had the ultimate comeback.

Jesus began his life miraculously having been born of a virgin. Jesus was unique and special, which was recognized by the religious scholars of his day while he was still young. Jesus launched his public ministry when He was thirty years old. He traveled throughout his region doing good, healing the sick and teaching God’s message. He preformed many miracles and created quite a stir amongst many religious leaders.

Jesus predicted that the Kingdom of God would come but it would not be an earthly kingdom or a political revolution. Rather Jesus would become the leader of each individual’s life and establish His teachings as the way to live life. Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life. However, He was viewed with suspicion and disdain by the religious leaders of his day. Those religious leaders convinced one of Jesus’ disciples to betray Him.

Jesus was arrested and brought before the Roman authorities for punishment. Jesus was guilty of no crime, yet he was crucified. Crucifixion was the most painful and horrendous death a person could be sentenced to in the ancient world. The hands and feet were nailed to intersecting wooden beams and then the cross was lifted up and placed in the ground. Jesus also had a crown of thorns placed on His head and His side was pierced with a sword. The entire time He was on the cross He was mocked, ridiculed and spat upon.

Finally, Jesus died. There can be no greater setback than to be cruelly and mercilessly killed. Jesus was buried in a cave. Jesus died on a Friday and some women went to the cave on Sunday morning and found the stone in the front of the tomb had been rolled away. Jesus was not dead, but had risen from the grave! The greatest comeback in history had taken place, a dead person had come back to life – death had been beaten. His resurrection proved His victory over sin and death.

Anyone who confesses their sins to Jesus will be forgiven and granted eternal life. Thus, because of Jesus’ comeback any person can have their greatest personal comeback. The setback of mistakes, failures and sins can be forgiven. The comeback of inner peace, purpose and meaning in life is now available. We can live our lives in a personal relationship with God experiencing His plan for our lives and we can spend eternity in heaven with Him after this life is over. Thanks to Jesus, life’s greatest comeback is available to you any time you choose.

So, you gonna look back or you gonna make a comeback?

You have a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, something is not right but you can’t quite figure out what that feeling is about. Your relationship partner has become distant, he/she is working late on a regular basis. You suspect there may be someone else but every time you bring it up with your partner, he/she denies the possibility. The only thing you can do is try to catch them red-handed. However, before you go into CSI mode, make sure you have some signs he/she is actually cheating, but don’t confuse signs with proof. Here are the top 3 possible signs of unfaithfulness in a relationship:

1. Projecting and Other Psychology tricks

You are the one that is being accused of being the cheat. They suddenly take an interest why you were late the other night, why your cell phone was turned off even though you proved that the battery had run out. You see cheaters often try to cover up what they are doing by accusing the other innocent partner of cheating. They feel it takes some of the heat off them. Additionally, another possible sign is that everything is suddenly an argument. This is a form of reverse psychology; by getting you into a fight about something and then storming out they are able to feel less guilty as they can say it was your fault. For you it works as you are left feeling that you are the one to blame. This one sucks so look out for it.

Another sign or excuse is ”I need some space to figure out my feelings.” Men and women who are involved with someone else will request more space, time alone or away from the family. They may say it is due to confusion over their feelings or stress at work. This can be a sign that there is someone else and the spouse is trying to figure out ways to have more freedom.

2. A Sudden Need for Privacy

If things the two of you used to share openly suddenly become private pay attention cause something is probably up. He/she may start password protecting computer activity. Unusual calls, text’s or IM’s that have your spouses attention but are quickly cut off when you are near by. Turning off their cell phone completely which means that you are unable to contact them. Cell phone and credit card bills may be hidden. If you ask why or attempt to find out information that used to be common knowledge between the two of you, you will be accused of snooping or trying to control your spouse. Big warning sign!

3. Behavior that just doesn’t add up

Being at the gym every night. This is a classic sign many people wonder why their spouses are suddenly working late when they have never before, going to the gym but not losing weight, taking a class that has unusual hours. Being late for anything in general to which they have no reasonable explanation. Not being where he/she was expected to be. Missing time they can’t explain. Money that isn’t accounted for. Receipts for things you don’t have. Missing clothing. Clothing that does not belong to your family. Being caught in little lies about the details of the day.

~

How to Catch an Unfaithful Partner

If your partner has any or all of the signs of cheating, he could be actually cheating. Now you need proof, so you got to catch her/him red-handed or make them confess somehow. Despite popular belief, most lying and cheating does not get discovered because a suspicious spouse is good at interrogating a partner (e.g., where were you? who were you with? etc.). Typically, cheating spouses get caught in one of two ways:

Accidental Discovery:

In most cases, deception and infidelity are uncovered by mistake. A husband or wife decides to come home from work early, a third party inadvertently reveals the truth, an unpaid parking ticket reveals a spouse’s true whereabouts, an e-mail exchange is accidentally sent to the wrong person, and so on.

Monitoring a Spouse:

Surveillance, by comparison, is an attempt to discover the truth by monitoring a spouse’s behavior. If you’re dealing with a lying and/or cheating spouse, some type of surveillance is almost always needed.

PRACTICAL TIP FOR CATCHING A CHEATING AND LYING MOFO:

Keep a journal of your spouse’s reported activities. Write down the times, dates, places, other people involved, excuses given, etc. Your journal will become invaluable as you compare what’s said with phone bills, credit card statements, atm withdrawals, talk to other people, etc. A cheating spouse is likely to change his or her story, or question your memory, so keeping a record of everything is critical.

Keep track of all incoming phone calls. Record the time and number of all calls.

Plan a surprise visit to work, or come home at unexpected times, or make announcements about having to work late, but then come home early, etc.

Keep track of your spouse’s mileage, receipts, credit card statements, atm withdrawals, phone records, etc.

If you can, check your spouse’s call log. Look for an unusual amount of phone calls. Keep in mind that cheating spouses often store their lover’s phone number under someone else’s name: a friend, a co-worker, etc.

You can also purchase surveillance equipment (hidden cameras and voice activated recorders) or download computer monitoring software (keylogger) which will make it easier for you to monitor your spouse’s activities. Using such equipment can, however, can raise some legal issues.

Never confront your spouse until you’re certain that you have enough evidence to make your case. And never reveal all of your evidence at once. Most cheating spouses will try to concoct a story to fit the evidence presented. But, if you withhold some evidence, and let your spouse create a story, it gives you the opportunity to use the remaining evidence as leverage. And by strategically withholding evidence, your spouse will start to question exactly how much you know, increasing the odds that he or she will tell you the truth.

Quit your job because monitoring your spouse is a full time job.

Finally, listed below are several more techniques, products, and services designed to help you catch a lying and cheating spouse.

In most cases, the options listed above are very effective when trying to discover the truth about a cheating spouse. Hopefully, you can find a technique that will work in your specific situation.

The sad situation is that unfaithfulness plagues many relationships all over the world. Studies show that infidelity has been found to be the single most cited cause of divorce in over 150 cultures. (Betzig, 1989) In Western countries, between 25 and 50% of divorcees cite a spouse’s infidelity as the primary cause of the divorce. (Kelly, 1987; Amato, 1997)

Here are some other frightening stats:

Approximately 20-25% of men and 10-15% of women engage in extramarital sex at least once during their marriage. (Laumann, 1994; Wiederman, 1997)

Pregnancy appears to be a time of increased risk of extramarital sex. (Allen, 2005; White, 1982)

11% of adults who have ever been married or cohabited have been unfaithful to their partner (Treas & Giesen, 2000).

Infidelity is influenced by many social and demographic factors. All of the following were associated with an increased risk of infidelity: having been part of a couple for a long time; having had a high number of prior sex partners; being male or black; living in a central city; and thinking about sex several times a day (Treas & Giesen, 2000).

(Source: http://www.kinseyinstitute.org/resources/FAQ.html#Infidelity)

SOME GOOD ‘OL FASHIONED FAITHFULNESS IS HARD TO FIND!

Faithfulness. Is it that hard to find? Is the covenant of marriage so disposel? In our current culture, apparently, yes. But, I do not present these statistics to scare you away from marriage or to be used as an excuse to walk around paranoid that your girfriend or spouse is going to cheat on you. Do not be discouraged. We, as Christians, do not aim to be a statistic, nor do we let the statistics be our guide, rather, but we aim to set a bar for future statistics. Once again, I reiterate, this article is not to deter you from getting married or getting into a relationship, but it is to highlight the value of finding someone and being a person who chooses to be faithful. But not just in marriage…faithfulness must extend beyond marriage and into every area of our lives.

As followers of Jesus, we actually cannot be anything else but faithful because that is the identity of God. He actually chose “faithfulness” to be his name. He could of chose anything, such as love, or peace, or powerful, but he chose FAITHFULNESS. Remember Moses and the burning bush? That was the first time God appeared to Moses and talked to him. Moses asked God, “What is your Name?” God replied, “I am who I am.” This answer was not a flippant, “none of your beeswax, Moses” kind of response. Very simply, God was telling Moses that He is the one that will do what he says he will do.

Is there evidence that God is who He says He is? Absolutely! Among the numerous examples in the Bible, there is one in particular that needs highlighting. There is this guy named Joshua and he is the leader of the Israelites after Moses. God gave them specific instructions not to make any covenants with foreign nations in His name. God is not racist, but at that time, the Israelites were a young nation, still unfamiliar with “I AM” (a.k.a. YHWH, a.k.a. God), so they were very susceptible to worshipping other foreign gods and taking on the culture of other nations. Anyway, Joshua ends up getting tricked by the Gibeonites (a foreign nation) and he makes a covenant with him. Once, Joshua realizes that he has been tricked, he has two options, either break the covenant or remain faithful to the covenant. Although, he made a mistake by making a covenant in the first place and although he was tricked, Joshua chose not to compound his mistake by breaking the covenant (which is a huge no-no) with the Gibeonites. God blessed Joshua supernaturally (the sun stood still!) because Joshua was living out God’s identity and heart when he chose to be faithful.

You know what is even more amazing? Even today, God is still faithful to that covenant that Joshua made with the Gibeonites. It seems that the Gibeonites, because of the covenant with Israel, became grafted into the nation of Israel and and their customs and also, their religion. If we trace their history, the Gibeonites became known as the Jews of Cush and after another name change, they are currently known today as the Falasha Jew of Ethiopia. For many centuries, they have been forgotten and marginalized in the jungles of Africa. But, the Jews of Ethiopia -estimated in 1983 at about 30,000 –have maintained their Jewish faith and religious love of Zion and the Holy Land. The birth of the State of Israel, and its subsequent contact with the Falasha Jews, broke ground for “Project Moses and Joshua”, which began a mass migration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. Israel was determined to protect what was left of the Jewish population from total assimilation.

It may be said that if this community –which is settling “en masse” in Israel today –had not been saved, the rest of the Jewish People might never had known of this wonderful “lost” tribe. However, the covenant Joshua made with the Gibeonites and the promise God made through his prophets that the Jews of Cush would return to Zion and to Jerusalem has not been broken; it is taking place before our eyes.

Forgotten by Men, but remembered by God. So, as it is with your life. The promises of God in your life are not forgotten by Him…be patient. He is Faithful. He is Faithful.

In the meantime, while you wait for the promises of God to come into fruition in your life, you probably should as yourself, “Am I a faithful person?” Although, cheating and being late are not the same thing, but if you get down to, its about faith and reliability. Are you reliable? Do you keep your promises? Not just in marriage, but in every area of your life? If you struggle with the smaller things and less disastrous areas of “unfaithfulness” (non-adultery related), here are some tips to help you improve in this area.

Some tips how to be a more faithful person:

1. Let your “yes” be “yes” and “no’s” be “no”.

Never, never, never make a promise you don’t intend to keep. There is no quicker way to lose trust. And once trust is gone, it takes a very long time to recover (and sometimes, it’s simply gone forever). When you give someone your word, you are providing a personal guarantee and believe me, a broken promise will not go unnoticed.

Think of your word is a contract. Before agreeing to anything, be sure you understand the terms and conditions. If the deadline or expectation is unrealistic, address it. Yes, you always want to push yourself and challenge your capabilities, but not to the point where you can’t meet the commitment.

Be able to say no when you can’t. Most people say “YES” because they feel they have no choice. Have some boundaries, people! You are allowed to say NO!

2. Use a good calendar app or whatever it takes to be on time or not forget an appointment.

When you say you will be somewhere at a certain time…mean it! If you have trouble managing your time or are late often, use a calendar app or google calendar and sync it to your phone. I have four calendar apps and three clock apps on my iPhone. I hate being late or missing an appointment. So, I do whatever it take to get my butt at my appointment, on time!

3. Under Promise, Over Deliver

Don’t just tell people what they want to hear. Instead of making promises that aren’t backed up with realistic planning, help yourself and make your commitments attainable. Set the bar at a reasonable level. And then, jump right over it.

If you promise something that is too challenging and then fail to deliver, you have no one to blame but yourself. Give yourself some leeway. Remember that (almost) nothing goes as smoothly as you hope it will in the workplace. Plan for disruptions. Expect surprises. Add “padding” to your estimates. This will only impress people when you perform over and beyond. And it will provide you with some wiggle room should Murphy’s Law kick in and everything that can go wrong actually does.

4. Confront Mistakes

We all make promises that we intend to keep and then later realize we can’t. We all make mistakes. And though we want to do our very best, everyone falls short at times. These are just the facts of life. It’s how you deal with them that matters most. Be upfront and address problems right away.

If you can’t follow through on something you said you would, be apologetic and attempt to make it right immediately. If something happened that made it impossible for you to deliver on a promise, speak up and do everything in your power to fix it. Most importantly, don’t hide or make excuses or shift blame when things go wrong. Take responsibility. Own up to it. Make it right. And then figure out what happened so it can be prevented in the future.

Being reliable doesn’t mean you’re perfect. It just means that others can have faith in you. They can feel confident in your abilities and in your character. Happy Faithfulness building and good luck if you are trying catch that cheating spouse .

——————————

7 Tips To Out Smart Snacking

Snacking doesn’t have to be unhealthy, nor does it necessarily lead to weight gain. In fact, when done properly, snacking can be a nutritious way to keep those hunger cravings away.

The trick is to snack “smarter” by following these 7 simple tips:

Protein Packed

A smart snack is one that fills you up and keeps you full between meals. And nothing will do that better than a protein filled snack. Protein fills you up faster than carbs or fat and it will leave you satisfied between meals. Lean sliced meats, boiled egg whites and string cheese are good examples protein filled snacks.

Read Labels

You never know what’s really in your food unless you flip the box over and read the nutrition label. The flashy marketing on the front of the box doesn’t always tell the whole story. Pay close attention to the serving size, as well. While a serving of chips might have only 100 calories, that serving may only be 5 chips!

Calories Count

When it comes to losing or even maintaining weight, calories are what count (you don’t need to count per se, but they do count/matter!) So, it’s important that your snack not only fills you up, but does so with a minimal amount of calories. Remember, your having a snack, not a meal, so keep your snacks around 150 calories and be sure to add them to your total daily calorie counts (if your keeping track). Don’t know what is around 150 calories? Here is a list of ideas for snack that are under 150 calories:

Healthy 100-150 Calorie Snacks

Half apple with 2 teaspoons of peanut butter

10 cashew nuts

10 almonds

2 ounces of sliced turkey

1 multi-grain waffle sprinkled with cinnamon

Mixed raw veggies with 1/4 cup fat-free ranch dressing

3 hard-boiled egg whites (sprinkled with pepper) and .5 cup skim milk

1 packet plain oatmeal with 3 cut-up strawberries mixed in

1/3 cup of unsweetened applesauce with 1 slice of whole-wheat toast

1/2 cup frozen orange juice

3 ounces low-fat cottage cheese and 3 whole-wheat crackers

3 handfuls of unbuttered popcorn (sprinkle on some pepper or other herbs for taste)

4-6 ounces of fat-free or low-fat yogurt

2oz lean ground beef with .5 cup spinach and tablespoon salsa

1 string cheese

Let’s be realistic though, sometimes you’re craving something sweet and a piece fruit just isn’t going to cut it. It’s during these cravings that it’s good to have snacks like cookies, etc portioned out into smaller bags. These smaller portions will help stop you from grabbing a large bag of cookies and eating the entire thing!

Fibre up!

Like protein, fiber helps fill you up and keep you feeling fuller longer, along with many other health benefits. Mixing a little fiber with protein in your snack will give those hunger pains the one, two punch!

Are You Really Hungry?

Before you even reach for a snack ask yourself – Am I really hungry? Recognizing hunger is important when trying to control calories and stop mindless snacking. Next time you think you feel hungry try drinking a glass of water to see if that satisfies you. Are you craving something sweet even though you just ate? Think of eating vegetables or chicken instead. If you are truly hungry then the veggies and/or chicken will sound good.

Pass On Processed

When craving a snack, it’s easy to reach for a bag of chips out of your cupboard or hit up the vending machine. But, these types of highly processed snacks pass on little to no nutrition and just leave you feeling hungry a short while later.

So, pass on processed foods and opt for whole, natural snacks that are nutritious and filling. If you find it hard to snack on healthy foods at your workplace, check out these 15 healthy snack ideas for work to help get you through the day.

Here’s 10 snacks to stash at work with 150 calories or less:

Fruit: apples, bananas, oranges, grapes . . . anything goes!

Veggies: carrot sticks, celery, edamame . . . the sky’s the limit!

Larabars, Kashi TLC granola bars, Luna Bars, Nutrigrain bars

Single servings of nuts or trailmix: Save money and packaging by buying in bulk and portioning at home.

Preportioned cheese: String cheese, Laughing Cow wedges

Crunch: Kashi TLC crackers, Soy Crisps

Peanut butter: Smear it on apples or crackers.

For the ‘fridge: yogurt, cottage cheese

Popcorn: Bring air-popped corn from home.

Cereal: Go for lower-sugar options or oatmeal.

Portion Control

As stated before, calories are what matters when losing weight. And an easy way to control your caloric intake without meticulously counting each calorie through portion control. Portioning out snacks into smaller 100 calorie or so bags is a great way to stop yourself from overindulging and they make a convenient snack when your on-the-go.

—————————

Smart Snacking

One important step to leading a healthy lifestyle is to make sure the majority of your snacks are healthy. Makes sense right? But, if most of your snacks come out of the vending machine at work or from fast food restaurants it makes it extremely difficult to adopt a healthy lifestyle. That’s where it pays off to do a little planning. Instead of waiting till hunger strikes while at work, prepare some healthy snacks ahead of time and keep them on hand to help avoid the vending machines and drive-thru’s.

Here’s what to look for in a snack:

Foods that satisfy hunger. For example, nutritious snacks that contain fiber, protein, etc. Stay away from processed foods as they provide little to no nutrition and you’ll be hungry again shortly thereafter.

Keep the calories around 150 or less. Remember, this is a snack and not a meal.

Fruits and veggies, whole grains, nuts/seeds and low fat dairy products all make good snack choices

5 More Smart Snack Ideas

To give you some more ideas of what a healthy and filling snack looks like, here’s my 5 “go-to” smart snack ideas that are 100 calories or less: (by the way, they are high in protein and fibre!)

1 and half cups of unshelled edamame

3 hard-boiled egg whites sprinkled with pepper and 1/2 cup skim milk

Half apple with 2 tsp of peanut butter

1 scoop of whey powder mixed with ice (lots of ice, so it become like an ice malt)

Mixed raw veggies with 1/4 cup fat-free ranch dressing

Do you know that you can easily trick your own mind? Mind is the aspect of intellect and consciousness experienced as the combinations of thought, perception, memory, emotion, will and imagination, including all unconscious cognitive processes. However, the Human Brain tricks us whenever it can. You don’t actually see what it is in reality or you don’t even actually hear or smell the way it should be. Here are some ways you can easily play tricks with your own brain. I assure you that the following “tricks” are completely safe.

Ganzfeld Procedure

At first this might sound like a bad practical joke. Begin by tuning a radio to a station playing static. Then lie down on a couch and tape a pair of halved ping pong ballsover your eyes. Within minutes you should begin to experience a bizzare set of sensory distortions. Some people see horses prancing in the clouds or hear the voice of a dead relative. It turns out that the mind is addicted to sensation so that when there’s little to sense (that’s the purpose of ping pong balls and static) your brain ends up inventing its own.

Shrink your Pain

In case you experience an injury, then see the injured part with an inverted binoculars, soon your pain will seem to be decreasing in its magnitude. Recently, a reasearch at Oxford University has lead to the discovery of a new pain killer – the inverted binoculars. The scientists demonstrated that the subjects who looked at their wounded hands through wrong end of the binoculars, making the hand appear smaller, experienced significantly less pain and decreased swelling. According to the researchers, this demonstrates that even basic bodily sensations such as pain are modulated by what we see. So next time if you stub your toe or cut a finger, do yourself a favour, look away!

Confuse your Proprioreception

This requires two chairs and a blind fold. The person wearing the blindfold should sit in the rear chair, staring at the back of the person sitting in the front. The blindfolded person then reach around and place his hand on the nose of the other person. At the same time he should place his other hand on his own nose and begin gently stroking both noses. After about 1 minute, more than 50% of the subjects report their nose as incredibly long. Therefore this is called Pinocchio’s Effect. The Pinocchio effect is an illusion that ones nose is growing longer, as happened to the literary character, Pinocchio when he told a lie. It is an illusion of proprioception, reviewed by Lackner (1988). To explain the effect the other way, a vibrator is applied to the biceps tendon while one holds one’s nose with the hand of that arm. The vibrator stimulates muscle spindles in the biceps that would normally be stimulated by the muscle’s stretching, creating a kinesthetic illusion that the arm is moving away from the face. Because the fingers holding the nose are still giving tactile information of being in contact with the nose, it appears that the nose is moving away from the face too, in a form of perceptual capture. Similar phenomenon happens using the blindfolded method.

Confuse your Mindedness

Lift your right foot a few inches from the floor and then begin to move it in a clockwise direction. While you’re doing this, use a finger your right index finger to draw a number 6 in the air. Your foot will turn in an anticlockwise direction and there’s nothing you can do about it! The left side of your brain, which controls the right side of your body, is responsible for rhythm and timing. The left side of your brain cannot deal with operating two opposite movements at the same time and so it combines them into a single motion.

Confuse your Hearing

This can be performed with three people, one being subject and other two objects/ observers and we also need a headset connected to routine plastic pipes on the either side. Ask the subject to sit on a chair equidisant between you and the second observer. Now each one of you hold the pipes from the headset on the corresponding sides and one by one speak into the pipes. The subject will rightly tell the direction of the sound. Now exchange the pipes and repeat voicing into the pipes. The subject’s brain will get confused and he’ll point in the opposite direction of sound. Sound localization is a listener’s ability to identify the location or origin of a detected sound in direction and distance or the methods in acoustical engineering to simulate the placement of an auditory cue in a virtual 3D space. The human auditory system has only limited possibilities to determine the distance of a sound source, mainly based on inter-aural time differences, exchanging the pipes would cause perception by the opposite sided neurons in the brain only and thus the subject will not be able to localize the sound.

Confuse your Depth Perception

Depth perception is the visual ability to perceive the world in three dimensions (3D). Looking at a sight that you have not seen before or entering into a 3d cinema with one eyes closed will alter the way your mind perceives things. This would not happen for most already seen things because your brain is tuned to judge the time and space accurately. However, your brain will not be able to fill the gap if you use one eye. Depth perception arises from a variety of depth cues. These are typically classified into binocular cues that require input from both eyes and monocular cues that require the input from just one eye. Binocular cues include stereopsis, yielding depth from binocular vision through exploitation of parallax. Since (by definition), binocular depth perception requires two functioning eyes, a person with only one functioning eye has no binocular depth perception. And hence stepping into a 3d cinema will not be an amazing phenomenon as it used to be. This is more so in people who are blinded with one eye by birth.

Confuse your photoreception

Stare at the central point (plus sign) of the black and white picture for at least 30 seconds and then look at a wall near you, you will see a bright spot, twinkle a few times, what do you see? or even who do you see?

Now do another trick to confuse your photoreceptors. This will temporarily blind you from one eye (for around 30 seconds and don’t worry it is of no harm) Go into a room, shut the door and turn out the lights so that the room is mostly dark. Wait until your eyes adapt to the darkness. You should be able to make out the basic shapes of the room from the tiny bit of light coming in from under the door. Next, close your right eye and cover it with your hand. Turn the light on, keeping your eye closed and covered. Leave the light on for about a minute or until your left eye has adapted to the light. Uncover your eye and look around the darkened room. What do you see? What you might experience is an illusion discovered by researcher Uta Wolfe in which it seems that your left eye is closed, even though it is open. The explaination to this is the visual cycle that takes time to be adapted, when it is not adapted as for the left eye, the eye will send wrong signals to the brain thus image would be darkened for the left eye until it adapts.

Confuse your Cognition

Take a look at the spinning girl. Do you see it spinning clockwise or counter-clockwise? I see it spinning counter-clockwise, but i was able to switch it in the other direction, its hard for many people. Give it a try. The spinning girl is a form of the more general spinning silhouette illusion. The image is not objectively “spinning” in one direction or the other. It is a two-dimensional image that is simply shifting back and forth. But our brains did not evolve to interpret two-dimensional representations of the world but the actual three-dimensional world. So our visual processing assumes we are looking at a 3-D image and is uses clues to interpret it as such. Or, without adequate clues it may just arbitrarily decide a best fit – spinning clockwise or counterclockwise. And once this fit is chosen, the illusion is complete – we see a 3-D spinning image. By looking around the image, focusing on the shadow or some other part, you may force your visual system to reconstruct the image and it may choose the opposite direction, and suddenly the image will spin in the opposite direction.

~

CAN WE TRUST OUR OWN PERCEPTION? People tend to think of perception as a passive process. We see, hear, smell, taste or feel stimuli that impinge upon our senses. We think that if we are at all objective, we record what is actually there. Yet perception is demonstrably an active rather than a passive process; it constructs rather than records “reality.” Perception implies understanding as well as awareness. It is a process of inference in which people construct their own version of reality on the basis of information provided through the five senses. Of course our senses often really do play tricks on us. The scintillating grid fools the eye.

~

In the illustration a grid appears normal in the center, yet the left and right areas are irregular and incoherent. If you stare at the center of the grid for a few minutes, the grid will miraculously heal itself and you will perceive a perfect grid. In reality, the grid is still incoherent but your mind will perceive it as a perfect grid. This is because your mind is strongly influenced by your past experiences, education, cultural values and role requirements as well as by the stimuli recorded by their receptor organs. Your mind expects the grid to be a perfect grid and makes it so. Perception is also skewed by the observer’s own expectations, assumptions and preconceptions. One classic experiment to demonstrate the influence of expectations on perception is the “great playing card switch up.” In this experiment they took regular playing cards and altered them so that the spades were red and the hearts black. Pictures of the cards were flashed briefly on a screen and, needless to say, the test subjects identified the normal cards more quickly and accurately than the changed ones. After test subjects became aware of the existence of red spades and black hearts, their performance with the changed cards improved but still did not approach the speed or accuracy with which normal cards could be identified.

This experiment shows that patterns of expectation become so deeply embedded that they continue to influence perceptions even when people are alerted to and try to take account of the existence of data that do not fit their preconceptions. Trying to be objective does not ensure accurate perception. In other words, even when you aware that you have preconceptions, it is not enough to guarantee 100% correct perception.

Here is another example. In the next illustration, read the colors of the words aloud. The colors not the words.

© Psychology Today

This task is difficult, as I’m sure you’ve discovered. Not only is it difficult but it is resistant to practice. The difficulty of removing the interference effect of the words when trying to state the colors is because our brains are conditioned to recognize words without effort. In other words, people see the meaning or words without much effort or consciousness. On the other hand, naming colors is not automatic. It requires more effort than reading, thus creating interference in this simple task. Our pattern of the expectation of reading words is so deeply embedded it cannot be turned off and creates the interference with the task of naming colorus.

The Implications for Dating and Marriage

The position of the test subject identifying the red and black playing cards is analogous to that of a man or woman trying to make sense of all the potential mates they cross paths with. What is actually perceived when we meet these members of the opposite sex, as well as how it is interpreted depends in part, at least, on the dater’s patterns of expectation. People seeking marriage partners do not just have expectations about the color of hearts and spades. They have a set of assumptions and expectations about what is attractive and unattractive, what makes a good potential marriage partner, and a certain “type” they think is good for them. People consistent with these expectations are perceived and processed easily leading to “like”, while people that contradict prevailing expectations tend to be ignored or distorted in perception, and considered, ”not my type.” Of course, this distortion is a subconscious or pre‑conscious process, in other words, you are not aware that you are doing this.

THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS

Look at the illustration. Do not read further content until you guess as to what the illustration might represent.

Expectations come from a variety of sources, including past experience, professional training, and cultural and organizational norms. All these influences predispose us to pay particular attention to certain kinds of information and to organize and interpret this information in certain ways. Perception is also influenced by the context in which it occurs. Now, suppose I tell you the illustration contains the face of a cow. Can you find it? You will find it if you expect to find it. Patterns of expectations tell us, subconsciously, what to look for, what is important, and how to interpret what is seen. These patterns form a mind‑set that predisposes the black and white spaces to organize themselves in such a way that you can perceive the face of a cow.

This perception is formed on the basis of very little information (i.e., you were told the illustration contained the picture of a cow.). Once people form impressions on the basis of very little information, they do not reject or change them unless they obtain rather solid evidence. The early but incorrect impression tends to persist because the amount of information necessary to invalidate a hypothesis is considerably greater than the amount of information required to make an initial interpretation. The problem is not that there is any inherent difficulty in grasping new perceptions or new ideas, but that established perceptions are extremely difficult to change (Hello? Does this sound like anyone you know!) I promise you that every time from now on you see this illustration, you will immediately see the face of the cow.

The phenomena mentioned in this article has been observed in wine tasting experiments. They take expensive wine and put it in a cheap bottle and vice versa. They then serve it up for some wine experts. The wine experts sure enough give the wine in the expensive bottle a thumbs up.

The reason: ”When tasting what they think is good wine, they are looking at what is good about it and ignore all the rest (there mind does it automatically based on expectations), when tasting what they think is cheap wine, they are looking at what is bad about it and ignore everything that is good (again without conscious awareness).”

Implication: Wine prices are determined by ‘wishful thinking’ more than quality, because the quality for the most part is illusory as demonstrated in many many experiments.

Another experiment: They take good high quality wine and poor low quality wine, serve them up and hand out the glasses to experts and non-experts. This time they don’t know what is good and what isn’t. They show that the experts aren’t so expert after all since they have nothing to base there expectations on whilst naive people can say with better accuracy what is the expensive wine and what is the cheap wine since they have no expectations as they don’t know much about wine.

Implication: Expectation can cause havoc especially to those who claim great knowledge if they somehow can’t find a way to balance it off with a sort of youthful naivety! (Source: Psychology Today)

HOW THOUGHT PERCEPTION CAN MESS WITH US WHEN FINDING A MARRIAGE PARTNER

If the statement from above is true, that “once people form impressions on the basis of very little information, they do not reject or change them unless they obtain rather solid evidence. The problem is not that there is any inherent difficulty in grasping new perceptions or new ideas, but that established perceptions are extremely difficult to change,” then that means that many single people have tossed aside perfectly good potential mates because that person did not make a good first impression.

How often have we discounted and rejected people because they did not initially meet our subconscious set of expectations and criteria? How often have we given people the “once over” and then decided that it is a “no-go”? How often do we choose people not as how God sees them, but based on what the world dictates as attractive and not attractive? Based on the evidence that I have provided, it is evident that our mind and our perception can play tricks on us and that it is considerably unreliable, even in the most simplest of tasks. Could this be applied to our choice in future marriage partners? Most likely. However, I am not saying our senses our completely unreliable, but I am underscoring that we might need to reconsider how we have been choosing or rejecting people. Should we give some people a second glance to make a better second first impression? Should we consider dating people that is generally not our “type”? Should we give people a chance before making snap judgments? Most likely.

However, here is the problem. If you actually try to do this, you might find yourself struggling because your mind is just screaming, “I AM NOT ATTRACTED TO THIS PERSON” or “HE/SHE IS NOT MY TYPE”, arrggghhhhh! Here are some tips on how to change in this area:

1. Change Your Dating Paradigm

The only way you can change your dating paradigm from a “worldly” one to a “godly” one is to renew your mind. But, I know for some, that just sounds too abstract. One way I can suggest is to start by actively meeting and getting to know people that are, “not your type.” Then, before you make a judgement about them as suitable or unsuitable, get to know them first and trying envisioning how God would see them. Ask yourself, how does God view (insert name here)? What are some godly qualities Jane Doe has?

Also, another suggestion I can offer is that a person should try to recognize and distinguish the non-essentials from the essentials. For some people, a man with no hair is a deal breaker or age might be a deal breaker. Are these really deal breakers? Can you not see past the surface and see the heart of person before making your decision? Do you want someone to judge you and toss you in the same way? I don’t. I don’t ever want to be reduced down to my hair, or my weight, or my face. I am so much more and so are they and so are you!

An additional way to renew your mind is to read books and listen to sermons on dating and how to choose a partner. Obviously, you need some discernment on which books to read (ask you pastor for suggestions). The basic idea is to fill your brain with information that will counteract what you see in movies, music, magazines, Kim Kardashian, and such. Sort of like shocking your system to come back in alignment with God.

2. Get a Godly Second Opinion

If we go with the premise, we cannot trust our own perception, then who can we trust? Get a godly second opinion, or three or four. Having a godly parent or godly spiritual parents, mentors, etc. is invaluable when it comes to dating. They see more than we do because they have a wealth of wisdom and experience under their belt. Also, they love us and want the best for us. Obviously, they are not perfect, but it is wise for a person wanting to date to seek an outside opinion when it come to choosing future marriage partners.

3. Try Speed-Dating

What better way to meet and talk to all sorts of people than to go speed dating. Speed dating will allow you to meet many people in a short amount of time. Also, you will talk to people you normally don’t or won’t talk to. Once again, this is not necessarily the recommended way to meet your future wife or husband, but it certainly is a good way to change your dating paradigm! Also, you might be pleasantly surprised at what you will discover. You’ll never know, unless you try. If there is a speed dating event near you, you should get on that right away! Readers, my prayer for all of us, single people is that we get some Godly perception and that we don’t cheat ourselves out of marriage because our paradigm and our perception is out of whack! Please, go try something new! ~EL
